Nick Cave is now widely recognized as a songwriter, musician, novelist, screenwriter, curator, critic, actor and performer. From the band, The Boys Next Door (1976-1980), to the spoken-word recording, The Secret Life of the Love Song (1998), to the recently acclaimed screenplay of The Proposition (2005) and the Grinderman project (2008), Cave’s career spans thirty years and has produced a comprehensive (and sometimes controversial) body of work that has shaped contemporary alternative culture. Despite intense media interest in Cave, there have been remarkably few comprehensive appraisals of his work, its significance and its impact on understandings of popular culture. In addressing this absence, the present volume is both timely and necessary.

Cultural Seeds brings together an international range of scholars and practitioners, each of whom is uniquely placed to comment on an aspect of Cave’s career. The essays collected here not only generate new ways of seeing and understanding Cave’s contributions to contemporary culture, but set up a dialogue between fields all-too-often separated in the academy and in the media. Topics include Cave and the Presley myth; the aberrant masculinity projected by The Birthday Party; the postcolonial Australian-ness of his humour; his interventions in film and his erotics of the sacred. These essays offer compelling insights and provocative arguments about the fluidity of contemporary artistic practice.

Sul prezzo mi pareva davvero esagerato. Io tutto sommato me lo potevo (quasi) permettere, con qualche piccola rinuncia (sono un ricercatore universitario da 1200 al mese, e non da 9000 euro come qualcuno ha follemente scritto sui giornali qualche giorno fa…). Ma comunque erano pur sempre 150 euro!!!! Questo spiega perché a teatro di ragazzi moltogiovani ce n’erano pochi (diciamo che si andava dai 20-25 anni in su). In ricordo dell’indimentibalibe concerto romano di Nick, ci sono andato con la maglietta di “Dig, Lazarus, Dig”.  E infatti la ragazza del botteghino ticketone, con un sorriso, mi ha chiesto com’era stato il concerto di Nick…

Sulla scaletta, beh, c’è poco da dire. Una buona selezione (soprattutto da Mule Variations, Blood Money e sul finale l’inossidabile “Rain Dogs”, ma peccato l’assenza totale di pezzi da Alice). Lie to Me da Orphans in apertura e poi, in ordine sparso: Down in the Whole, Jesus’s Gonna be here, Chocolate Jesus, House where nobody lives, Rain Dogs, Hoist that Rag, Eyeball Kid, On the Nickel (vado a memoria). Ma ci aggiungerei:
Tom Traubert’s blues (splendida)
Dirty in the ground (inattesa da Bone Machine, ….e sublime)
Bottom of the World
All the World is Green (brividi…)
Cold Cold Ground
Innocent when you Dream (cantata in coro, grande emozione…).

Piccola ombra: I primi pezzi sono stati al di sotto delle aspettative per la voce del buon vecchio (che proprio non ci arrivava), mentre dopo le cose sono decisamente migliorate. Diciamo che il concerto è andato in crescendo. Bravi i musicisti, anche se il figlio batterista non mi è parso precisissimo con il tempo. Suono volutamente impastato e oscuro, come si conviene al maestro.
Delusione sul finale, il buon (e caro…in tutti i sensi) tom ha negato un secondo bis. Per concludere, Tom ci ha dato quello che potevamo aspettarci da un vecchio mostro sacro come lui. Un ricordo per sempre, qualche piccola ombra ed infine la constatazione dei paradossi della vita: il concerto del “maledetto” Waits poeta dei reitti era infatti frequentato anche e putroppo da fighetti e fighette eurodotati in un teatro blindato, dove ti fucilavano alla prima foto scattata….

Inatteso fuori programma. Manuel Agnelli degli Afterhours in fila al bagno, che gentilmente si è fatto fotografare (nonostante la ragazza che l’accompagnava sembrasse nervosetta e facesse qualche capriccio). GRANDE!!!

Per dirla con tom, che di sogni se ne intende:
